Virtualware and Teleton Chile collaborate to provide telerehabilitation to rural communities in Chile

  • Virtualware and Teleton Chile have agreed a new contract that will see the continuation of telerehabilitation throughout Chile using the VirtualRehab system! The deal will facilitate regular physiotherapy to families who live far from healthcare services and hospitals.

Teleton, is a charitable organisation that provides specialised rehabilitation for children and young people with acquired disability. Since May of 2016, Teleton has been developing the project “Teleton in your community”, an innovative initiative that seeks to provide personalised therapy using non-immersive virtual reality in selected rural rehabilitation and healthcare facilities.

In order to deliver these services, Teleton Chile selected the VirtualRehab platform, which uses low-cost motion capture technologies to deliver personalised rehabilitation remotely to their clients. The platform registers and stores all patient results in the Microsoft Azure cloud, making the data accessible for the occupational and physiotherapists who are then able to remotely monitor and configure patient therapy sessions.

The main aim of the project is to bringing quality patient care to rural areas in the country, without the need for patients to make long trips to a larger hospital. Rodrigo Cubillo, therapist and National Coordinator of the Assistive Technology Unit at Teleton, has stated how successful the project has been for all stakeholders involved, highlighting how the VirtualRehab telerehabilitation will improve the quality of life of many families in isolated areas of Chile.

As a result of the excellent feedback from therapists and patients, Teleton has decided to sign a formal agreement with Virtualware to extend the VirtualRehab service to a futher 14 locations around the country. Teleton will donate the licences and hardware to these centres for use with their patients.

Cristobal Artigas, VirtualRehab Product Manager in Latin America, points out “Virtualware has been collaborating closely with Teleton Chile and their team of rehabilitation experts, and this agreement is a great vote of confidence for our solution and telerehabilitation in general.  VirtualRehab is continuously evolving as a product, and our latest 4.0 version has added new modules of assessment, exercises and exergames, that the therapists in Teleton Chile are excited about incorporating into their existing services.”
