After passing the Law of Sexual Health and Reproduction, the Basque Parliament was looking for an affective Sex Education program for young adults based on using the most up-to-date information and using the latest in digital media technologies. The main goal was to promote sexual health and prevent unwanted pregnancies amongst young people. The Basque and Consumer and Health Department was in charge the project and organizing a public competition which was won by the Euskolker Foundation together with the Basque Country University.
Virtualware collaborated in the project by developing an educational videogame which poses various challenges to students with the goal of them learning more about sex education in a casual manner. The game is based around a graphic adventure where characters have access to different resources, interesting links and documents with the the constant focus being on improving the player’s knowledge of sexual health.
The videogame successfully promotes the integration of sexual education in secondary schools. It provides teachers with the necessary resources to teach students about this subject in a more dynamic and engaging way. Students not only acquire more knowledge about sexuality, but also learn about individual and social ethical behavior and responsibility when it comes to sex.
Sexumuxu received a reward from the World Association for Sexual Health-WAS in September of 2013.
